Barberry Herbal Tincture

$30.00

Barberry (Berberis spp) is a medicine we don't necessarily hear very much about, but should! This ubiquitous shrub is abundant, pervasive, and rich in a very special alkaloid extensively studied to have a whole host of antimicrobial properties, Berberine.

This alkaloid gives Barberry its distinctive yellow roots and inner bark and is the same alkaloid that makes the famous Goldenseal so antimicrobial and gives it its golden-yellow color as well. But importantly Barberry, unlike Goldenseal, is not at-risk and or endangered like Goldenseal is, making it a wonderful analog species in many situations.

(Working with abundant "medicine in place" would be considered bioregional herbalism, to avoid over-harvesting endangered species)

Herbal Actions
ROOT & STEM BARK- Anti-inflammatory, alterative/blood-purifier, antimicrobial, anti-diarrheal, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, anti-septic, cholagogue (stimulates bile flow), digestive bitter, emmenagogue, febrifuge, laxative, mucous membrane tonic, purgative (laxative)

ROOT & STEM BARK- Bitter tonic that stimulates the liver and gall bladder. Useful for a sluggish liver- promoting the flow and discharge of bile into the small intestine.  Stimulates elimination and works as a laxative as well.  Useful for all liver diseases, including hepatitis, sluggish liver, jaundice, and gallbladder conditions (including gallstones and cholecystitis). For the liver, Barberry combines well with dandelion root and a bit of fennel seed.

Traditional Chinese Medicine documents its use dating back over 3,000 years ago, whilst the Ancient Egyptians combined Barberry with Fennel Seeds to prevent plagues and treat fevers. In folklore and magic, Barberry was used to ward off evil and protect one's house and self from enemies.

The planets that rule this herb are Jupiter and Mars and the Air Element.

Mars Botanicals should be your choice if your magic is focused on defense or attack, involves building physical strength or courage, concerns masculine energy, or is meant to fend off binding spells, especially of the love magic (Venus) sort. Martial plants tend to be prickly--either, having thorns, or by having caustic sap.
